(斜里岳) Mt. Shari Hike

If someone can rent a car, it will definitely be much cheaper and doable as there's no public transportation available.

  • JPY5,720. Train, Kushiro Station < > Kiyosachou Station (JPY2,860 one way)
  • JPY4,000. Taxi, Kiyosachou Station < > Seigakusou trailhead (JPY4,000 one way, assumed to be shared between two people)
Hike Date / Difficulty (Elevation: 1,547m / 5,075ft)
  • Hike date: Not sure if I'll hike it given how far it is.
  • Difficulty: 4 out of 5. 
  • Route below is around 11.0kilometers, with an elevation change of ▲1,144m/ ▽1,143m, or around 6 hours, based on this log.

When to Go
Throughout the year! I see logs even in December and January. 

Special Notes
  • Summit is called 知床半島
  • Trailhead. Seigakusou (清岳荘, google maps pin)  
    • Train, Kushiro Station to Kiyosatocho Station (清里町駅)
    • Taxi, Kiyosatocho Station (清里町駅) to Seigakusou (清岳荘).  The trains are pretty rare, so call in advance to reserve -  0152-25-2538. It is around JPY4,000 one way. 
  • Mountain hut.
    • Paid. Seigakusou (清岳荘).  It is JPY2,120 per head, +300 for futon rental, +drinking water as they don't provide it. If you plan to stay in your car and sleep on it, it's JPY520 per car. 
    • Free. None. 
    • Camping. None.
Itinerary
  • Just hike. Haha. Given the logistics from Tokyo, I think the best option is to fly to Kushiro, rent a car, drive early in the morning and start the hike at 5 or 6am.
