(丸亀城) Marugame Castle

An accidental side trip, Marugame Castle is very similar to Maruyama Castle in that it serves as the center of the city, providing a panoramic view. It is also one of the twelve original castles that still stand to date, which makes sense because Shikoku probably doesn't see as much invasion as the other areas.

Budget: JPY0 (~USD0)
  • *JPY200. Entrance, Marugame Castle, optional
Visit Date
  • September 21 and 22, 2020
  • I did this trip as part of a four night-four day trip to Shikoku. I'll link the blog post once it's published.

When to Go
Special Notes
  • The castle grounds are open 24/7. However, if you want to enter the castle itself (which is about the size of a small coffee shop), then they are open from 9am to 4:30pm.
  • There are a couple of ways that Google Maps was showing me. Just go the main entrance to go up. Here's the pin.
  • The sunrise is amazing! But so is the night view of the city, where I could just see the silhouette of the hill in the featured photo.
  • I will not write an itinerary, but just some pictures I took for the night view and the sunrise.
Trip Pictures - At Night
The light-up at Marugame Castle.

And going up, up, and up.

I do love light-ups.

I was a tad disappointed with how little the "castle" is. It's even smaller than the storage units of other castles.

But it does look pretty from afar.
Trip Pictures - Sunrise

Upon seeing the light in behind the castle, I felt a little stupid for not getting up earlier to watch the sunrise. I had to remind myself that sunrises take time, and I should still try going up.

Thankfully, the little ball of fire wasn't up yet when I got there.

And there she is! I'm so glad I got up early to see the sunrise.

I don't know what's up with this building belching so much smoke. Either way, I went back to the hotel for my nap.
